APN Media New Zealand Limited (APNNZ) Fuse Magazine
1. Competition
APNNZ will publish as Fuse as a Special Section in the New Zealand Herald on Thursdays on 12, 19, 26 August and 16, 23, 30 September 2004. APNNZ reserves the right to change these dates.
2. Eligibility for Entry
2.1 Entry is only open to students who are currently enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary institution.
2.2 All students submitting work of any kind agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.
2.3 Where only one student contributes to a piece of work, that student will be ‘the Entrant’ for the purposes of these terms and conditions.
2.4 Where more than one student contributes to a piece of work (for example where one student writes an article and one student contributes a photo):
(a) the piece of work may only be entered once
(b) the piece of work must be submitted by one person only (on behalf of all contributors) who will be the Entrant for the purposes of these terms and conditions
(c) The Entrant will ensure that it has the permission of the contributors of the piece of work
(d) the Entrant must acknowledge all the contributors in their submission
(e) the Entrants and contributors must meet the requirements of clause 2.1;
(f) the piece of work will be judged as one entry and will be eligible to win one prize only, with the Entrant being the deemed prize winner.

Every entry must be:
(a) the exclusive and original work of each Entrant and any acknowledged contributors;
(b) ) If posted, clearly marked with each student’s name (pseudonyms are not accepted), student ID, the course and tertiary institution they are currently enrolled in.
3. Specific Category Entry Requirements
An entry may comprise a piece of work from one or more of the following categories (each piece of work being produced by one student unless a photograph from another student accompanies it):
3.1 Articles
(a) All articles must be original.
(b) Offensive language is not acceptable.
(c) If posted each article must be typed.
(d) Sources used must be quoted so they can be checked at APNNZ’s discretion.
3.2 Cartoons
(a) If a cartoon entry is shortlisted for publication, the student may need to arrange to send the original cartoon on its illustration board. APNNZ will return the original cartoon on completion of judging. Cartoons are the only entries that will be returned to students. APNNZ does not accept any responsibility for the loss or damage in transit of cartoons.
3.3 Photographs
(a) Only photographic prints will be accepted as valid entries. Do not submit negatives or transparencies.
(b) A detailed caption must be supplied with each photographic entry
(c) Up to three related photographs may be submitted as one entry if the photographs show a sequence of events.
(d) APNNZ may decide to use a Herald photo instead of one submitted by a student to accompany an article.
4. Submitting Entries
4.1 Entries may be submitted online on www.nzherald.co.nz/fuse, posted to FUSE Magazine, PO Box 706, Auckland, faxed (09) 373 6421 Attention Paola Ghirelli, FUSE Magazine, or emailed to fuse@nzherald.co.nz
4.2 Entries must reach the above address approximately two weeks before each publication date of Fuse listed above.
4.3 APNNZ accepts no responsibility for late, lost or misdirected entries.
5. Judging Criteria
5.1 All valid entries will be judged by editorial staff at The New Zealand Herald, and prizes awarded on merit, according to creativity, originality, entertainment, humour, information or newsworthiness.
5.2 The judges will take into consideration different judging criteria based on the particular style of work.
5.3 The decision of the judges will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
6. Prizes
6.1 Each valid entry submitted for publication will go into that weeks draw to win one of 10 $50 Phonecards. Winners will be announced in Fuse and their prizes posted out to them.
6.2 Each week one of the published written entries will be selected as the Editor’s Favourite – Written award. The prize is a Canon Canon MP 390 All-in-one Printer.
6.3 Each week one of the published photographic or cartoon entries will be selected as the Editor’s favourite – Graphic award. The prize is a Vodafone Sharp GX15 mobile phone.
6.4 Each week the Editor will choose the best “How to Spend $500 for a Business Venture” submission and the award is a $500 Bank of New Zealand Bank account. Winners of the $500 bank account must meet Bank of New Zealand’s standard account opening criteria. For those under 18 years this requires:
(a) provision of suitable photo identification, such as a driver’s licence, passport or student identification card.
For those Entrants over 18 years, this requires:
(b) provision of suitable photo identification, such as a driver’s licence, passport or student identification card; and
(c) a credit check to be performed by Bank of New Zealand.
6.5 Student prizes are not transferable, exchangeable or redeemable for cash.
6.6   All major weekly prize winners will be notified by post and telephone.
7. Copyright
7.1 Each student acknowledges that APNNZ intends to publish some or all of each selected entry in Fuse and therefore all content contained in the entries (including photographs) must be the exclusive and original work of the student.
7.2 Each student must use all reasonable endeavours to ensure that the entries do not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party. In particular, no entry may contain images or written work downloaded from the Internet.
7.3 Students own the copyright of any work submitted to Fuse.
8. Contributors' Details
8.1 APNNZ collects and holds various information about students and teachers including personal information, provided with the entry. APNNZ will hold the personal information collected at 46 Albert Street, Auckland.
8.2 The personal information the students provide will be used for the following purposes:
(a) verification of each student’s identity;
(b) processing and considering the student’s entry in the competition; and
(c) sending notification of the prizes to the students.
8.3 APNNZ may disclose each student’s personal information for publicity purposes in connection with the entry.
8.4   Failure to provide necessary personal information requested at the time of submitting the entry will result in the entry being rejected.
8.5 Under the Privacy Act 1993 all students have rights of access to and correction of their personal information held by APNNZ by emailing fuse@nzherald.co.nz, by faxing (09 373 6421) or posting (PO Box 32, Auckland) a signed letter requesting access to the information.
9. Plagiarism
All work must be the original work of the student. Plagiarism will disqualify the entry.
10. APN New Zealand's Rights
10.1 All entries become the property of APNNZ for their sole and exclusive use.
10.2 All students agree to the use by APNNZ of their name, entry details and photographs for publicity purposes.
10.3 APNNZ has arranged this competition in good faith but does not accept any liability relating to the prizes or any student’s or tertiary institution’s participation whatsoever.
